About the Area

Banner Elk, North Carolina!

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, Banner Elk is the “Place to BE”. The richness of the land, the diverse activities and majestic beauty bring many visitors to the area each year. Guests find the small town atmosphere, relaxed environment, and friendly people a reason to return, or even stay in Banner Elk.

lees_mcraeFounded in 1900 by Reverend Edgar Tufts, our local college, Lees McRae College, is a small, private, four-year, coeducational liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. With over 900 students from more than 20 states and countries, LMC is well known for their outstanding Summer Theater program, and National Championship Cycling and Soccer programs.

Four Distinct Seasons

Banner Elk has four distinct seasons, and offers fun family activities all year long. As winter begins, Banner Elk helps thousands of families each year “start a family tradition” with many Choose N Cut farms for travelers to get a Christmas tree. Once the holiday festivities are over, the area becomes a “ski town”. Known as the “Ski Capitol of the South”, winter sports enthusiasts flock to the area for skiing, snowboarding, and tubing at the area’s larger resorts, Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain.

Spring and summer bring many types of guests to Banner Elk. We are the “hub” for guests wanting to enjoy a relaxing drive, hike, or picnic on the Blue Ridge Parkway, or families taking a trip to Grandfather Mountain, NC Largest Attraction. For outdoor enthusiast, Banner Elk is home to many rafting and fishing outfitters, hiking and biking trails, and distinct golf courses. Wildcat Lake is also open to the public, and offers swimming, canoeing, picnic facilities, playground, volleyball, and even a beach!!

Grandfather Mountain

Grandfather Mountain plays host each summer to the Scottish Highland Games. This annual event is the Largest Gathering of Scottish Clans in the World…yes, world!! Located only minutes from the Games, Banner Elk comes alive the second weekend in July with brightly colored tartans, Scottish Clans, athletes and spectators of all ages, gathered to foster and restore interest in traditional dancing, piping, drumming, athletic achievement, music and Gaelic culture. It is definitely something to see.

Banner Elk is also a destination for southern culture. We are home to many Master Fine Arts and Crafts Festivals throughout the year, the Banner Elk Heritage Museum, which is on the Civil War Trail, and historic Lees McRae College.

Woolly Worm Festival

Every October, Banner Elk is home to the Wooly Worm Festival. This annual event brings over 20,000 people to the Banner Elk area. The festival centers on a caterpillar that predicts our winter weather. Along with arts and crafts, this event is packed with things to do for kids of all ages.
