Enjoy All Southern Illinois Has to Offer
The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and Southern Illinois Wine Trail
The Shawnee Hill’s Wine Trail lies in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest and it is Illinois’ first and most award-winning trail. Twelve unique, family owned and operated wineries offer a diverse selection of nationally and internationally acclaimed wines for your enjoyment and the rolling hills and sandstone bluffs offer views for all to enjoy.
The Shawnee Wine Trail wineries are located in Jackson and Union Counties in Southern Illinois and follow a 30-mile loop through beautiful Southern Illinois scenery. A variety of unique eateries, antique shops, bed & breakfasts, parks and other attractions are available along the trail.
On the Southern Illinois Wine Trail Tour take pleasure in spending a relaxing day outdoors as you overlook the beautiful scenery Southern Illinois has to offer. Drink a glass of wine, play bocce ball, listen to live music, enjoy a great meal, or just daydream as you gaze upon the nearby rows of grapevines. These are just a few of the casual pleasures you can expect when you visit the six wineries on the Southern Illinois Wine Trail, all located East of Interstate 57 in Saline, Pope and Johnson Counties.
Shawnee National Forest
The Ozark and Shawnee Hills extend over 270,000 acres of rough mountaintops and rugged rock formations between the natural borders of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. This terrain, which is much different than the flat Midwest directly to the north, claims five different ecological divisions and hence creates vast diversity in topography, wildlife and recreation. Famous trails, wilderness, Midwestern wildlife and famed foliage are only some of the Shawnee’s attractions. Maple, dogwood, oak and pine are interspersed among the unique sandstone configurations that decorate the eastern hills and offer a bouldering destination for rock hounds. Lakes encompassing more than 2,700 acres and access to 135 miles of hiking trails, including the American Discovery Trail, can be found in the Shawnee.
Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge
Established in 1947, Crab Orchard is designated for recreational use, agricultural development, and wildlife conservation. The refuge’s 43,600 acres, half of which are a wildlife sanctuary and closed to the public, host a 4,000-acre designated wilderness, more than 5,000 acres of cropland, and three man-made lakes teeming with fish. The generally flat terrain is enlivened by forested hills in the south and chock-full of wildlife. Over one million people visit Crab Orchard each year, mainly to enjoy the lakes but also for wildlife observation, nature walks, and environmental education. Five youth camps on Little Grassy Lake provide a place for children (about 25,000 annually) to learn about nature and the refuge. Ferne Clyffe has been known as an outstanding natural scenic spot for nearly 100 years. An abundance of ferns, unique geological features and unusual plant communities create an atmosphere that enhances the many recreational facilities offered at the park. Trails wind through picturesque woods, allowing visitors to view fascinating rock formations and inspiring vistas.
Located on Illinois Route 37, just one mile south of Goreville and 12 miles south of Marion, the 2,430-acre park is easily accessible from both I-57 and I-24. With camping, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, fishing and sightseeing to choose from, you can’t help but enjoy a visit to Ferne Clyffe.
Tunnel Hill State Trail
The Tunnel Hill State Trail offers bicyclists and other outdoor recreationists with 45 of the most beautiful and peaceful miles in Illinois. The Trail stretches south from Harrisburg, through Vienna to Karnak, and includes a 2.5-mile spur through the Cache River State Nature Area from Karnak to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Cache River Education Center in Rago. Because a majority of the 45 miles crosses through Johnson County, Illinois State legislators named Johnson County the Bicycling Capital of Illinois.
The tunnel at Tunnel Hill, which has given the Trail its name, is one of the most fascinating features of the trail. Originally 800 feet long, the tunnel was shortened to 543 feet after a portion of the tunnel collapsed in 1929. There is an otherworldly sensation when entering such a long tunnel. One enters in full daylight, and there is always light at the end of the tunnel, but somewhere in the middle darkness and perspective merge.
